What they are
Injectables, such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, Belotero® , Radiesse®, Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport®, nonsurgially address wrinkles and may add volume to the face. Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Belotero® are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance, replaces lost facial volume, fills wrinkles, and gives the face a more youthful look. Radiesse® is made from calcium hydroxylapatite and can also fill wrinkles and restore facial volume. Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® correct and prevent minor wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the muscle that causes the wrinkle and is the most common nonsurgical procedure in the U.S.; Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® are both derived from Botulinum Type A, a botulism-related protein that is safe and secure for the very small amounts used in cosmetic surgery.
Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport® candidates are people who may be considering reducing fine lines on their faces, including frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead creases, eye-area and neck wrinkles, and lines on the nose bridge. Patients with neurological issues are not strong candidates for Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport®, and women who are pregnant or nursing are advised to postpone receiving Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport® injectables. Patients interested in treating severe wrinkles, skin folds, and filling out lips or areas around the eyes and top of the nose are good candidates for Juvederm®, Restylane®, Belotero® , or Radiesse®. Juvederm®, Restylane®, Belotero® , and Radiesse® also may be used to re-create volume in the cheekbones and middle of the face.
No anesthesia is required for Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport®. Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® are injected with a very fine-pointed needle and the skin is cooled immediately beore and after, lessening any discomfort. Juvederm® or Restylane® is also injected with a very fine needle after a topical anesthetic is administered. Juvederm®, Restylane®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Botox® will require additional treatments over time for maintenance of the patient’s desired appearance.
Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® injections are three of the safest and most common cosmetic procedures. Complications are unusual but can include bruising, headache, nausea, numbness, and eyelid or forehead droop. An allergic reaction can occur to either injectable, but this occurrence is rare. Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Radiesse® are also very safe injectables. Side effects from Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Radiesse® could be redness and swelling at the points of injection for a few days, as well as bruising or skin firmness.
Patients who receive Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport® are able to go home the same day and return to work immediately. Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® recipients can also begin wearing makeup right away. The effects of Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® may take a few days to emerge, and improvement in wrinkles and fine lines will continue for up to 3 months. Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Radiesse® patients are also able to resume their daily lives immediately after receiving the injectables. The results of Restylane® and Juvederm® can be seen up to a 9 months or more and Radiesse® can be seen up to a year or longer.
